Self-Care in the New Normal: Adapting to a Work from Home Set-Up
It is evident from previous articles (which you can read here) that health and wellness are extremely important, especially in this time of pandemic and with the majority of employees still working from home. It has been discussed what a person can do to stay fit and healthy, such as maintaining a workout routine, eating nutritious foods, connecting with others, and many other things. People have been reminded on a regular basis, but it is still up to the individual to determine how he or she can apply such things to himself or herself. Sometimes we know what is best for us, but we struggle to do it because we are preoccupied with other things and it is not our priority.
It is important that we prioritize ourselves above all else. Self-love and care should be at the top of our priority list. But how can we practice self-care in our current situation? Where do we begin?
Here are some helpful tips for your self-care plan during these times of lockdowns.
1. Know what you want and enjoy
During this stressful time, you should consider what you like to do and what you enjoy. It is healthy for you to pamper yourself every now and then. You can do your hobbies or simply sit back and relax. Not only that, but you can apply this attitude to other aspects of your life, such as working out. You can decide what type of exercise you would like to do. It’s like killing two birds with one stone; you’re staying fit and healthy while having fun. Since lockdown is happening right now and movements may be limited, there are online workout or class that you may want to enroll in. Some example of online workouts or classes are yoga, pilates, stretching, and many more.
2. Know your limitations
Each of us has our own set of limitations. Setting boundaries can greatly assist you in avoiding the feeling of burnout. Not only that but pushing yourself too hard can result in not only physical exhaustion, but also mental and emotional tiredness. You can ask for help even for simple tasks that will make you feel better. For example, you could ask a help from your friend to check on something for you that can help you save time. This also includes work-life balance. When your shift is finished, you should stop thinking about work and concentrate on your personal life.
3. Have a well thought out routine
It is better to have a planned routine for a day. It not only saves you from stressing out about what you should do for the day, but it also allows you to be more organized and make better use of your time. You should develop a new and better daily routine that fits your current situation, especially now that life in this pandemic is different. However, don’t forget to incorporate health-related ones into your routine, such as exercising, eating full meals, and getting enough sleep.
4. Have breaks and enough sleep
Take breaks and get enough sleep to allow your mind and body to recharge. If you don’t get enough sleep, you may wake up with headaches, and your mood may suffer as well. Not only that, but being sleepy can have a negative impact on your work performance and daily activities, potentially leading to additional stress and accidents. Sleeping for at least eight hours per day can also help you focus and maintain a positive attitude throughout the day.
5. Have a healthy diet plan
Even if you are pressed for time, remember to eat a full meal every day. You must eat in order to recharge the energy you have expended. Consume foods that contain nutrients that your body requires, especially Vitamin C, to boost your immune system, which is particularly important during these times. It is also acceptable to indulge in your food cravings, but set limits on how much you can consume, especially if you are craving sweets and oily foods.
6. Don’t keep everything to yourself
If you are feeling down and your heart is heavy, do not be afraid to communicate with people you can trust. Sometimes all we need is for someone to listen to us. This pandemic has been difficult for everyone, and we must prioritize our mental and emotional health as well. There are people whom you hold dear that can be your shoulder to lean on. Making connections with others can help you feel better.
Remember that you are not alone in this different time. But always remember that the person who can help you the most is yourself so better prioritize to love and take good care of yourself.
