We are all aware that not only is physical health important, but so is mental health. When going about your daily activities, you do not rely solely on physical energy. Even at work, your intellectual abilities are required to turn decisions into actions.

Positivity in life means far more than it appears. We understand that it is easier said than done because our way of thinking is still influenced by other factors such as our environment or the people around us, past and recent events, and experiences. Even employees may also feel anxious at times, particularly when there are project proposals, presentations, or ongoing projects. It is normal for a person to feel mixed emotions whether bad or good. However, we should give our best efforts to maintain a positive attitude and have a better and brighter outlook on life and future events.

How does positive thinking affect employees?

It eases mental health problems

Being a positive thinker is also related to being optimistic. Optimism has a significant impact on the mental wellbeing. Having a positive thinking throughout the day can cause a person to feel more positive mood. Positive thinking helps you see yourself as a better version of yourself and promotes self-esteem, so you will feel better as a result. People will also tend to focus on the positives rather than the negatives. If negativities in life is more reflected, it would have an adverse influence on one’s mental health and increase the risk of metal health problems such as stress and depression. Our mental health affects our physical health as well, so it is better to check on it time by time. Even the slightest effect of stress or depression can affect the employee’s wellbeing and productivity in work. However, doing so is difficult for those who are currently depressed, but it can serve as the first step towards recovery.

Increases work productivity

Positive thinking enhances one’s brain to ensure that it is functioning in the best possible condition, which eventually leads to an increase in an employee’s work performance and productivity. Positivity also implies that a person seems to have more energy and focus on getting tasks completed. When a person devotes his or her attention to a goal, he or she becomes more motivated, dedicated, and committed to the job. Not only that, but it also increases the stimulation of brain as having positive thoughts can help the brain to function better. Furthermore, being a positive thinker helps in weighing out which decision are advantageous or disadvantageous, or which is the best possible step to take in order to achieve a great work result.

Better coping skills

A positive mindset allows an employee to approach difficult situations productively and with a solution-oriented mindset. A person’s ability to deal with challenges may improve by adopting this kind of outlook in life. People who embrace positivity see the good even in hardships and have a strong belief that today’s challenge is only temporary and will soon pass. It is natural to feel sad at first, but this will end quickly. It was not an option to be upset and sulky about problems. Not only that, but people who think positively have a high level of resiliency. Employees with this skill set are excellent at adapting to negative situations, outcomes, or losses. They are more likely to discover and develop more effective strategies and solutions.

Improves life quality

Putting together the benefits mentioned above; having a good mental and physical health, which is connected on having great work performance and productivity in daily lives, would most likely lead to improved life quality. When we have an optimistic view, we feel more inspired, motivated, and engaged with the people surrounding us. Taking a break from the negativity also promotes self-care. There was a study in 2019 wherein it was stated that positive thinkers tend to have 11–15% longer lifespan compared to others. Even at work, employees who have a positive attitude toward their jobs can influence their work colleagues. Connecting with others is still necessary for achieving success and happiness. Overall, positive thinking has a positive effect on a person’s wellbeing and social life.

After learning about the numerous advantages of positive thinking, we are all inspired to try and begin with it. Yes, it is not easy given the challenges that life throws at us, but here are a few pointers to help us develop a positive attitude.

· Surround yourself with positive and trustworthy people

· Do not be hard on yourself

· Do not focus on bad things

· Practice being thankful

· Encourage yourself everyday with some self-affirmations

· Do not hesitate to have breaks
